China's ports (Yantian, Shekou, Shanghai, Ningbo, Qingdao, and Tianjin) are seeing a recovery in overall operational capacity following the Spring Festival. The 40% to 50% reduction in vessel capacity and single-shift operations caused by the holiday are gradually returning to normal. However, there are still some delays in vessel schedules and high utilization rates of storage yards in certain areas. There is a possibility of hidden congestion in the short term.
Port of Shanghai The Shanghai Port is one of the busiest container terminals in the world. The demand for container storage space at this port has increased, and the cost of truck transportation is higher than normal operating periods: this is consistent with the situation before the holidays in previous years. Although operations continue, it is recommended to extend the planning time for cargo routes passing through Shanghai during this period. Port of Ningbo The strategic location of this port on the eastern coast of China makes it a key gateway for manufacturing exports. Due to overloading, some of the docks have a storage rate close to full capacity. Appointment-based entry and limited container collection measures have been implemented. The charges for container loading and towing have significantly increased, and the risk of container unloading has also risen simultaneously. Port of Yantian It also faces similar tense situations, with limited truck transportation resources due to seasonal driver shortages. It is reported that the cost of container trailer services increased by approximately 200% before the New Year. The port continues to handle goods, but the timeline for container movement has been extended.
Port of Shekou
Some terminals have experienced congestion. Some terminals have issued warnings of overbooking or suspension of document processing due to increased demand for routes. The charges for trailers have also risen significantly. Due to the management of shipping companies regarding the allocation of transportation capacity, the booking capacity is limited.
Port of Nansha
The utilization rates of the second and third phase wharf storage areas are at a high level, resulting in longer waiting times for trailers. The port area has implemented the ETA-5 regulation, which only accepts heavy containers that have been loaded within the past 5 days. At the same time, strict entry control measures have been strengthened to further reduce the operation time window.
The current congestion at major Chinese ports reflects the typical concentrated shipping activities before the Spring Festival.
