Tariffs | 25% and 15% clash simultaneously: Trump strikes Iran with a stick and offers Taiwan a carrot.

2026-01-13

Trump suddenly issues "Iran tariff order": All countries doing business with Iran will be subject to a 25% tariff increase on their trade with the US. He claims it will "take effect immediately", but the White House has not yet finalized the details.

Meanwhile, US-Taiwan trade agreement is approaching: The tariff on Taiwan's exports to the US may be reduced from 20% to 15%, and companies like TSMC have promised to increase their investment in building factories in the US.

According to Xinhua News Agency, US media reported on the 12th that the US State Department has asked US citizens to leave Iran immediately.

US President Trump posted a message on social media on the 12th afternoon, stating that any country that has commercial dealings with Iran will be subject to a 25% tariff when conducting any commercial transactions with the United States.

Trump said that this was the "final" decision and would "take effect immediately".

Trump did not provide any specific details on this matter on social media. As of the time of this report, the White House has not released any official documents regarding this issue.

This move is regarded as part of the Trump administration's intensified economic strangulation of Iran: replicating the "secondary tariffs" model previously applied to oil buyers from Venezuela, with the intention of severing the main artery of Iran's foreign trade - its oil revenue.

The New York Times reported on January 12 that three sources familiar with the matter said that the United States is close to reaching a trade agreement with Taiwan. It is expected that the framework of the agreement will be announced within this month. The content includes reducing tariffs from the original 20% to 15%, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) needs to set up five new factories in Arizona, etc. If this is true, this tax rate will be the same as that agreed upon by Japan, South Korea and the United States. Japan, South Korea and the United States reached a tariff agreement last year.
