Reuters reported that US President Trump signed an executive order on Thursday (July 31) imposing reciprocal tariffs ranging from 10% to 41% on 187 countries. Trump had previously announced that higher tariffs would take effect on August 1st for countries and regions that had not yet reached trade agreements with the United States. The White House statement stressed that tariffs on some countries, including China, Canada, Mexico and Brazil, are "regulated by separate statutes."The new tariffs will take effect at 12:01 AM EST on August 7, 2025.Meanwhile, US Trade Representative Greer defended the administration's aggressive tariff policy, stating that President Trump possesses the "diplomatic authority" to impose punitive tariffs to advance US geopolitical interests overseas and that tariff rates for trading partners are "essentially set." The New York Times reported that Greer, in an interview with CBS aired on Sunday (August 3rd), said these politically motivated tariffs are essentially sanctions, albeit at "different levels."
